Supervisory Essentials: Strategies for Success!

Course Description:This course is designed to assist new first-line supervisors in developing the competencies they need to achieve their primary responsibilities, some of which include: Accomplishing the goals of their units through the work of their employees; ensuring that the work of their employees is of the highest possible quality.  The course can also assist newly appointed managers as well as serve as a refresher for experienced supervisors and managers who would like a refresher.  This workshop will address competencies in the following Executive Core Qualifications: Leading People, Leading Change, Building Coalitions, and Communication.

Course Goals: The goal of this workshop is to help participants acquire skills that will enable them to develop strategies for addressing the challenged in making the transition from employee to supervisor or manager. Participants will examine leadership practices; practice the cover stages of team development and identify ways for building trust and cooperation on teams. In addition, styles for resolving conflicts and techniques for collaboration and reaching consensus will be discussed. Participants will create a personal action plan to help them apply the skills learned from the course to their jobs.

Audience: This course is mandatory for newly appointed DOE first-level supervisors required to take 40 hours of supervisory training during the probation period. This course satisfies 32 hours of the 40 hour requirement. Experienced supervisors and managers are encouraged to attend this course as a refresher. This course meets the 8 hour annual refresher training requirement.

The Office of Learning and Workforce Development (HC-20) will assess the course cost for this training session directly through each Headquarters organization’s Working Capital Fund account.  Field office participants should register via CHRIS.  They should ensure to note the cost of the training course in the tuition field of the training request.
Funding for travel and per diem-related expenses are the responsibility of the attendee’s respective organization.
Cancellations must be made two weeks prior to the course start date by contacting the session POC to avoid being charged.
