As we celebrate the historic accomplishments of women during Women’s History Month, there is no better time to engage and empower the next generation of girls to rise up as leaders of our democracy and economy.

Finding your niche and making your mark should be the goal of any young professional. Here at the Energy Department, while we drive our mission forward every day, our employees seek to make a personal impact on the people and communities they serve. This February, I spoke on this important topic at the 2013 Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference, a meeting of 550 students, academics, and computing professionals here in Washington D.C.

The Department of Energy (DOE) commissioned an exhibit documenting the contributions of African Americans to the Manhattan Project at Hanford Reservation.

Earlier this month, I joined Chris Smith, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy, on stage in Washington DC at the Black Engineers of the Year Awards (BEYA) conference to present him with BEYA's Professional Achievement award, recognizing the work of Acting Assistant Secretary Smith and his team in the all-of-the-above energy strategy of the United States.

As part of the National Science Bowl, more than 9,500 high school students take place in 70 high school regional competitions around the United States and Puerto Rico.  The winners of these regions advance to the National Science Bowl competition held every April in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
