Alison Markovitz served from 2013-2017 as Director of the Laboratory Operations Board and Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy, focusing on management and operations of the Department.  The Laboratory Operations Board (LOB), comprised of senior leaders from DOE and the National Laboratories, is the primary Department-wide forum for addressing management challenges and improving efficiency and effectiveness in areas that impact the DOE National Laboratories.  A key initiative of the LOB has been to oversee the Department’s efforts to revitalize its aging infrastructure.  Under the LOB’s leadership the Department conducted new enterprise-wide assessments of its infrastructure, obtained additional funding to address aging facilities, and issued reports on the state of DOE’s general purpose infrastructure and its excess contaminated facilities.  The LOB also is responsible for overseeing the Department’s efforts to strengthen its partnership with the National Laboratories, including the commitments made by DOE in response to the Congressionally-mandated Commission to Review the Effectiveness of the National Energy Laboratories (CRENEL).  Efforts include a new policy to clarify roles and responsibilities, improved laboratory planning, and reforming the Department’s Directives system which establishes requirements for operations.

Previously at the Department of Energy, Ms. Markovitz was the Acting Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Deputy Secretary.  Prior to this, she served as the Department’s Executive Secretary, managing the Office of the Executive Secretariat.

Before joining the Department of Energy, Ms. Markovitz worked at the White House as a Deputy Associate Counsel.  Prior to this, she practiced law at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP in San Francisco.  In addition, Ms. Markovitz served as a law clerk for Justice Carlos R. Moreno on both the California Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.  Ms. Markovitz received a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.A. from Yale University.
