White House Forum on Energy Security (Update)

July 27, 2010 - 4:48pm

Earlier this afternoon high ranking officials from the Departments of Energy and Defense came together with national security officials, business leaders, academics and other stakeholders for a discussion on the national security imperative of building a clean energy economy.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman kicked off the session by announcing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two departments to accelerate clean energy innovation and enhance national energy security.

Citing the added cost, risk of life and lost operational flexibility that America's military faces in order to deliver fuel supplies to our forces in combat, Deputy Secretary Poneman stated that by “working together, we can speed the transition to a clean energy economy, while helping protect our troops. Building a new energy future is the right thing to do to strengthen our national security, to promote economic prosperity, and to improve our environment. It is also the right thing to do for our men and women in uniform.”
