Statement from Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman on House passage of the GAS Act

October 14, 2005 - 11:58am

"I applaud the House passage of the Gasoline for America's Security (GAS) Act. Chairman Barton and his colleagues are to be commended for taking steps to address the high gasoline prices we face by seeking to expand our nation's refining capacity and fuel supply."

"The President has identified new refining capacity as a critical need for our growing economy, and this bill includes measures to simplify the refinery permitting process and limit the proliferation of boutique fuels, while maintaining high environmental standards. The bill also takes concrete steps to act on the President's call for new refineries to be sited on former military sites."

"I look forward to working with the Senate as it considers the bill so that legislation to improve our nation's energy infrastructure can be passed and sent to the President as soon as possible."
