Washington, D.C. – Today and tomorrow, Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman will participate in events to highlight President Obama’s State of the Union address and discuss the Obama Administration’s commitment to American energy.

Today, Thursday, February 2, Energy Secretary Steven Chu will meet with executives from various oil and gas companies, tour a recently completed major energy efficiency upgrade at the Texas Medical Center, and host a State of the Union Town Hall with students from Houston Community College.

Secretary Chu will tour the control room of the Thermal Energy Corporation at the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical center.  With the support of $10 million in federal funding, last year Thermal Energy Corporation completed a 48 megawatt combined heat and power plant that is expected to save approximately $11 million in energy costs per year.

Tomorrow, Friday, February 3, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman will tour Southwestern Energy’s natural gas operations near Conway, Arkansas, including a drilling site, producing natural gas wells, a supply yard, and operations center. Jack Bergeron, Senior Vice President – Fayetteville Shale Division, from Southwestern Energy will host the tour.

Immediately following the open press tour, Deputy Secretary of Energy Poneman, Conway Mayor Tab Townsell, and Mr. Bergeron will deliver remarks and take questions from reporters. Later in the day, Deputy Secretary of Energy Poneman will meet with business leaders in Little Rock, Arkansas.

These visits build on the President’s State of the Union address last week, where he presented a new era for American energy and outlined a blueprint for an American economy built to last, based on American-made energy resources and clean energy innovation.  He called for “an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy,” including natural gas and renewable energy resources.  The President highlighted the importance of energy efficiency in saving money for families and businesses and making American companies and industries more competitive. He also highlighted the Administration’s commitment to safe, responsible development of the near 100-year supply of American natural gas, which has the potential to support more than 600,000 U.S. jobs.
