WASHINGTON, DC - On May 24, 2011, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, U.S. General Services Administrator Martha Johnson and White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley, will announce next steps in moving the Federal fleet further towards advanced vehicles and decreased petroleum consumption.
Tuesday's announcement will continue to advance the President's goals of reducing Federal agency petroleum fuel use by 30 percent by 2020 and cutting our nation's oil imports by one-third by 2025. In October 2009, President Obama signed Executive Order 13514 on Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance and charged Federal agencies with increasing sustainability and efficiency in their operations. Transportation accounts for two-thirds of the country's oil use and contributes up to one-third of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions.
