Assistant Energy Secretary for Fossil Energy Charles McConnell will join Western Michigan University President John M. Dunn and Core Energy CEO Bob Mannes to tour WMU’s cutting-edge facilities at the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education.

WASHINGTON  – Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 27, 2012, Assistant Energy Secretary for Fossil Energy Charles McConnell will join Western Michigan University President John M. Dunn and Core Energy CEO Bob Mannes to tour WMU’s cutting-edge facilities at the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education, host a business roundtable and discuss the Energy Department’s efforts to support Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) as part of President Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy.

The Energy Department is leveraging its cutting-edge research to show that not only can Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) technology help industry make fossil energy use cleaner, safer and more sustainable, it also shows promise as a method to extract more, hard-to-access and presently untapped American fossil energy resources like oil and natural gas. By utilizing the captured carbon pollution, CCUS provides an additional, strong business and market case for companies or organizations to pursue the environmental benefits of CCS.

A number of innovative companies like Michigan-based Core Energy are already using captured carbon for enhanced oil recovery (CO2 - EOR), which today comprises approximately five percent of all U.S. oil production. The Department of Energy’s R&D portfolio is focused on further reducing the cost and increasing the effectiveness of carbon capture systems to supplement and expand CO2-EOR projects.
