Next month, hikers marveling at the sun bathed canyons and ridges of White Tank Mountain in the Sonoran Desert will see something on the horizon – if they look hard.
Built to blend into the desert landscape, the new 29,000 square-foot White Tank Library and Nature Center in Surprise, Ariz., is set to open on Nov. 13.
Rooftop solar panels provide 27 percent of the facility’s energy. Maricopa County officials estimate the complex is 42 percent more energy efficient than many modern day buildings.
The $8.5 million LEED-registered project was partially funded by a $540,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant through the Recovery Act.
